It is intended to restore Melin Daron to a working mill after many years of neglect to form the focal point of a community inspired development. Melin Daron is a Grade II listed building (CADW ref.19992) as “a substantial village corn-mill of vernacular type, and, despite the loss of the wheel, still retaining character as a rural industrial building. A mill has been on this site since 1252, it is thought that Melin Daron in its current from dates from 1860. In more recent times several grand plans have been proposed to re-develop the Mill and adjacent buildings but none came to fruition.
Our 2020 plans are simpler - to restore just the Mill building for educational, community and tourism benefits.
As Melin Daron cyf, we have excellent support from the community for this project - see Community Support
With this level of support we are very positive our more modest plans will bring success.
Y bwriad yw adfer Melin Daron i fod yn felin weithredol ar ὀl blynyddoedd lawer o esgeulustod, i ffurfio canolbwynt datblygiad a ysbrydolwyd gan y gymuned. Mae Melin Daron yn adeilad rhestredig Gradd 2 (CADW cyf.19992) fel “melin ŷd pentref sylweddol o fath brodorol, ac er gwaethaf colli’r olwyn mae’n dal i gadw ei chymeriad fel adeilad diwidiannol gwledig”. Mae melin wedi bod ar y safle yma ers 1252. Credir fod y Felin Daron yn ei ffurf bresennol yn dyddio o’r 1860au. Yn fwy diweddar cynigiwyd sawl cynllun mawreddog i ailddatblygu’r felin a’r adeiladau cyfagos, ond ni chafodd yr un ohonynt eu gwireddu.
Mae ein cynlluniau 2020 yn symlach, adfer adeilad y felin yn unig er budd addysgol, cymunedol a thwristiaeth.
Fel Melin Daron cyf mae gennym gefnogaeth ragorol gan y gymuned ar gyfer y prosiect yma – gweler Cymorth Cymunedol. Gyda’r lefel yma o gefnogaeth ‘rydym yn gadarnhaol iawn y bydd ei cynlluniau mwy cymhedrol yn llwyddianus.
Originally, the Melin consisted of a single building and over time developed with the addition of a corn drying kiln, a range to house two flour dressers, a stable and a store.
The mill range most is mostly complete but the water wheel has collapsed.
The gear train is compact, the whole of the gear train is housed in a Hurst frame. This was an unusual pattern with a crown ring on the Great Spur Wheel driving a lay shaft on the ground floor. The upper 1st floor lay shaft was driven by a leather belt from the lower lay shaft. There is also an unusual fan at the front base of the Hurst Frame, some say to cool the gears but probably to extract combustible flour dust.
There are several incidents of graffiti throughout the building. Of particular note are representations of ships on the trusses and dates on several timbers.
Yn wreiddiol, un adeilad oedd y felin a thros amser fe’i datblygwyd trwy ychwanegu odyn i sychu ŷd, adeilad i’r offer peillio, stabal a storfa.
Mae prif adeiladau’r felin mewn cyflwr gweddol ond mae rhan allanol yr olwyn ddŵr wedi diflannu. Mae’r peiriannwaith i gyd wedi eu lleoli yn gryno odditan y fframwaith goed sydd yn cynnal y meini. Mae hyn yn drefn braidd yn anghyffredin gyda danedd ar yr olwyn gogos fawr yn gyrru echel wastad ar y llawr isaf. Mae yna echel wastad ar y llawr cyntaf yn cael ei gyrru gyda gwregys lledr oddi ar yr echel wastad isaf. Mae yna wyntell wed ei lleoli o flaen y peiriannwaith i gynhyrchu gwynt i lanhau yr ŷd neu’r blawd.
Mae yna amryw o engreifftiau o graffiti i’w gweld trwy’r adeilad. Yn arbenig o ddiddorol mae darluniau o longau ar rai o’r trawstiau a dyddiadau ar amrhyw o’r coed.
The water for Y Felin was extracted from the Afon Daron some 850m to the east, running along a leat cut into the hillside. The 1888 Ordnance Survey Map suggests there was a second pond, approximately halfway towards the mill pond.
The water to the wheel was via a launder, the flow controlled with a penstock, initially overshot and later undershot. The penstock arm has curved pegged board on the inside of the building to regulate the flow hence power.
Only the cast iron hub and square spindle of the eight spoke 4.8m dia. waterwheel survives.
Inside, the waterwheel mainshaft has a bevelled pit wheel which engages with the wallower on a vertical shaft. This has the great spur wheel of 2.12m dia. Two stone nuts (gears with replacable wooden teeth) engage with the great spur wheel to transfer the power to the two millstones on the floor above by means of vertical shafts called quants.
The stone nuts and quant bearings are mounted on large timber baulks forming part of the tentering mechanism which allows adjustment of the distance between the stones. If only one millstone is needed it is possible to disengage the stone nuts.
Grain was fed into hoppers above the stones via a slipper shoe, this was oscillated by the rotating damsel and mace attached to the top of the quant. The grain flowed down into the tin eye into the centre of the upper stone and spread horizontally between the grooved stones to emerge from the perimeter as ground flour. The flour collected in the tun (the wooden casing around the stones) and channeled to the sack chute on ground floor. It was bagged and filtered through the eastern dresser.
Two dresser machines occupy the northern wall of the “Dresser Range”. Whilst similar in design it is there are differences between these two machines. The western machine has a trough below the whole length of the sloping tube whilst the eastern machine has a funnel like structure.
It is likely that the western machine may be a grain dresser designed to remove any dirt and stones from the grain before milling, whilst the eastern machine is a flour dresser for separating the meal into flour and bran.
Tynnwyd y dŵr ar gyfer y felin o’r Afon Daron, tua 850m i’r dwyrain trwy ffos oedd yn rhedeg ar hyd ochr y llethr. Mae Map Arolwg Ordnance 1888 yn awgrymu fod yna ail lyn, tua hanner y ffordd tuag at lyn y felin.
Llifai’r dŵr i’r olwyn ar hyd cafn, gyda’r llif yn cael ei reoli gan fflodiart yng ngwaelod y cafn, ‘Roedd braich haearn yn cysylltu’r fflodiart gyda bwrdd pegiog crwm er mwyn rheoli y dŵr a syrthiai ar yr olwyn, ac felly reoli ei grym.
Dim ond yr echel haearn bwrw sydd wedi goroesi o’r olwyn ddŵr oedd yn tua 4.8m ar draws.
Tu fewn i’r felin mae prif echel yr olwyn wedi ei chysylltu a’r olwyn pwll sydd yn troi y walwr sydd ar echel unionsyth. Mae’r walwr yn gysylltiedig a’r olwyn gocos fawr sydd yn 2.12m ar draws. Mae dwy olwyn gocos llai, ( gyda danedd pren y gellir eu hailosod ) yn cysylltu a’r olwyn gocos fawr i droslwyddo’r grym i’r ddau faen melin ar y llawr uwchben trwy ddwy echel unionsyth a elwid yn piniwr.
Mae treuliau’r piniwr wedi eu gosod ar drawstiau pren mawr sydd yn rhan o’r mecanwaith sy’n caniatau addasu’r pellter sydd rhwng y meini. Os mai ond un par o feini sydd ei angen i weithio mae modd dadgysylltu y piniwr o’r olwyn gocos fawr.
‘Roedd y grawn yn cael ei roi yn yr hopren uwchben y meini ac yn syrthio i’r glocsen oedd yn crogi o dan yr hopran. ‘Roedd y glocsen yn cael ei siglo yn ol a blaen gan y gwahoddwr oedd yn rhan o werthyd y piniwr. O’r glocsen ‘roedd y grawn yn syrthio i lygaid y maen uchaf a lledaenu rhwng y meini i ymddangos fel blawd ar y tu allan. Cai ei gasglu yn y cerwyn oedd yn amgylchynnu’r meini ac yna syrthiai i’r llawr isaf i’w roi mewn sachau.
Mae dau beiriant peillio ar fur gogleddol yr adeilad peillio. Mae y ddau beiriant yn debyg o ran dyluniad, ond nid yn union yr un fath. Mae cafn o dan hyd cyfan y peiriant gorllewinol tra bod strwythur i lenwi sachau o dan y peiriant dwyreiniol.
‘Roedd y peiriannau hyn yn trin y blawd, i’w wahanu yn eisin (bran) a peilliad (blawd gwyn).
There is graffiti including a number of dates and the depictions of both ships and cats. The ceiling beam crossing the mill range has graffiti on both its northern and southern surfaces. To the south the beam has the initials “RR” stamped into the beam together with the date 1903 written in pencil. On the northern face the figure “38” is stamped into the wood upside down. This presumably relates to the previous use of the timber or is a lot number for its sale. The eastern end of the Hurst frame is a concentration of the graffiti presumably representing a convenient surface for taking notes.
Notable features are three ship representations on the trusses of the mill range.
On Truss 1 there is the poker work representation of a two masted schooner with a single square rigged topsail. On the western leaf of the Truss 2 there is the simplistic representation of a single funnelled steam ship also in pokerwork.
On the eastern leg of the truss, is the scratched representation of a two masted brig. This is a square rigged vessel and the apparent representation of guns suggests a naval vessel. Also within this area are two pokerwork representations of cats.
Mae graffiti yn cynnwys nifer o ddyddiadau a darluniau o longau a chathod yn y felin. Ar y trawst nenfwd sydd yn croesi’r felin mae graffiti ar yr wynebau gogleddol a deheuol. I’r de mae’r llythrennau “R R” wedi eu stampio i’r trawst ynghyd a’r dyddiad 1903 wedi’i ysgrifennu gyda pensil. Ar yr wyneb gogleddol mae’r rhif “38” wedi ei stampio i’r pren wyneb i waered. Mae’n debyg fod hyn yn ymwneud a’r ddefnydd blaenorol o’r pren neu fe allai fod yn rif ei werthu mewn arwerthiant.
Mae hon wedi ei rigio yn sgwar gyda beth sydd yn ymddangos fel gynnau i’w gweld yn ei hochr, sydd yn awgrymu ei bod yn llong rhyfel. Hefyd yn ymyl mae dau ddarlun gwaith pocer o gathod.
